Arteriovenous Fistulae (AVF)
An arteriovenous fistula, or an AVF, is a type of hemodialysis access. AVF creation is a routine surgery where a vein is connected to an artery. Once connected, the vein is called a fistula. Dialysis machines take in blood from the fistula, clean the blood, and return fresh blood to the body through the fistula.

“Ultrasound should be the first technique of choice in the
evaluation of maturation, regardless of physical examination.” 19
